Both the above sizes of dishwashers come in three different configurations: freestanding semi-integrated or fully integrated. Freestanding is the most cost effective version and fully integrated the more expensive. The freestanding models are best used in separate utility rooms or where budget is a constraint as they tend to be bulky and unsightly. The semi-integrated model basically means that although the dishwasher front has an integrated kitchen furniture door the control panel is still visible along the top. This works well if there are drawers of a similar height either side of the dishwasher and thus the visual line is carried through.
The other alternative is of course the more standard 60cm wide model that should easily provide for the needs of a family of four. Good dishwashers nowadays are quite efficient and usually include an eco cycle that whilst shorter still cleans lightly soiled crockery glassware and cutlery easily. The shorter cycle also makes it practical to do more than one load as long as you are happy to cope with a sink full of dirty dishes until then. The alternative option would be to site the dishwasher in a separate utility room where the dirty dishes can be hidden out of sight; especially useful in the open plan kitchen/living/dining spaces of today's modern home. However the compromise of locating the dishwasher in the utility as opposed to the main kitchen would involve more of a trek between the two spaces when loading and unloading; these are options to discuss with your kitchen designer. For a large luxury kitchen used by a big family two full size dishwashers may be specified.
So now that we've defined standard let's talk small. Small dishwashers dishwashers 18 inches or narrower are actually pretty common these days. Amazon.com has a few of them for sale as does Sears Best Buy Lowes and others. You can get them for $400 or less. The thing to pay attention to is how high they are. If the dishwasher you want is a different height than your counter it is not the end of the world but you will have to make some adjustments if you want your counter top to stay level. It is easy if the dishwasher is shorter than the counter top your installer just puts the dishwasher on a little platform to make it even. But if it is taller than the counter you'll have to get used to having a bit of counter space a few inches higher.
Slimline dishwashers are a great option for small kitchen areas and for people who live alone or with small families because they are narrow and can be installed in kitchen cabinets. One can easily fit into any kitchen design because there are models that is fully integrated meaning that the panel corresponding to the rest of the kitchen cabinet can be attached to the front side the dishwasher if you are having a new kitchen built.
Dishwasher temperature sensors. In addition when checking different dishwasher choices it is important to consider temperature sensors as these appliances require heat to work their best. These sensors ensure proper water heating for an optimal wash. Check the temperature of water at home by simply running hot water only for one minute at the faucet closest to the dishwasher. Place a candy thermometer in a measuring cup. Check the temperature when the water runs into the cup.
