Compare the cost of replacing a damaged water inlet or drain valve with the cost of buying and installing a new dishwasher. There's a big difference. It's true that getting a repair done can be pricey and can throw your monthly budget into cardiac arrest. However dealing with a solvable problem when it comes up is much better than ignoring it and having to buy a whole new machine down the line. You might have to spend some money that you didn't plan on spending in the moment but you'll save far more money in the long run.
We plan to live in our home for at least five more years and this fact does weigh on our dishwasher choice. We want to make sure we have an energy efficient dishwasher but want to be able to recoup our money. Another mistake homeowners make is buying the most expensive energy saving product. Sometimes this is not an efficient use of money. If you buy a $1200 dishwasher you may only be saving $20-$50 a year on water and energy usage. You would have to stay in your home at least 10 years to realize the savings over the $700 model. Something else to consider when buying a dishwasher.
It is easy to look at a small kitchen and think "oh great I'll just never cook again. Or have friends over for dinner." But it does not have to be that way. Your tiny kitchen can have any of the things large kitchens have. You just can't have all the things large kitchens have. But if you really want a dishwasher there are more options than you'd think and you do not have to drain your savings account.
