The ideal size for a small dishwasher is whatever width your cabinets are next to the sink. Standard cabinet widths are 12 15 and 18 inches. There are plenty of 18 inch dishwashers for about $400 each. They typically fit eight plate settings which would work for a family of three. 15 inch dishwashers are far and few between none of the major retailers has one. So if the cabinets next to your sink are 15 inches or less you may want to skip an under counter dishwasher all together and try one of the newer counter top dishwashers.
The verdict. When it comes to choosing a dishwasher the options are many and varied. Always opt for the best one that you can afford as the higher the price the better the appliance tends to be. If you have the space do not be afraid to fit two dishwashers in your kitchen it will be a true benefit to big families and people who like to entertain often. Most importantly be sure to site the dishwasher as close to the water point and waste bins as possible. There is nothing worse than rinsing a plate in the sink and then having to traipse drips across the kitchen on your way to the dishwasher. Finally the extra expense of opting for a fully integrated model is really worth it especially if you want to achieve a minimal luxury and high-end feel to your kitchen.
When my husband and I needed to buy a new dishwasher we wanted to buy one that is well regarded by Consumer Reports. We wanted to make sure it had a good warranty and not too many fancy bells and whistles we'll never use. We've read that a lot of homeowners make the mistake of going hog wild choosing appliances with lots of features they'll actually never use. These upgrades can cost hundreds if not thousands of dollars and end up being a total waste of money.
If you didn't already find out there are so many benefits to owning your own dishwasher. One of the benefits is time saved instead of washing by hand even if your family is really big. Average families go through three sets of dishes daily; one for breakfast one for lunch and one for dinner. If you don't like washing dishes by hand and always feel like the sink is full of dishes you could well use a dishwasher in the kitchen every day. What is nice to know about dishwashers is all you have to do is load the dishes up put your soap in and then start washing. With most dishes and full sinks it only takes five minutes to load the dishwasher up.
The other alternative is of course the more standard 60cm wide model that should easily provide for the needs of a family of four. Good dishwashers nowadays are quite efficient and usually include an eco cycle that whilst shorter still cleans lightly soiled crockery glassware and cutlery easily. The shorter cycle also makes it practical to do more than one load as long as you are happy to cope with a sink full of dirty dishes until then. The alternative option would be to site the dishwasher in a separate utility room where the dirty dishes can be hidden out of sight; especially useful in the open plan kitchen/living/dining spaces of today's modern home. However the compromise of locating the dishwasher in the utility as opposed to the main kitchen would involve more of a trek between the two spaces when loading and unloading; these are options to discuss with your kitchen designer. For a large luxury kitchen used by a big family two full size dishwashers may be specified.
