The fully integrated model is the best option from a kitchen design perspective and gives you that hidden minimal and understated finish. The dishwasher is completely hidden behind a full height kitchen furniture door and thus indistinguishable from other cupboard doors. Only the horizontal handle along the top hints that there is a drop down door but if you opt for a recessed grip rail handle system (a hidden strip along the top of each door that enables it to be opened without a handle) the effect is even less obvious. Some high-end luxury appliance brands have also introduced a self-opening dishwasher which enables a completely handless kitchen design when combined with touch opening on all the other kitchen units.
Another option that is often overlooked is the 60cm dishwasher drawer which as its name suggests is a pull out drawer that houses the dishwasher. This can be in either a single or double arrangement. The advantage of this design is that it is easier to load and unload as you would not need to stoop as much. It also gives greater flexibility on where it can be located within the kitchen. Be sure to opt for the premium brands if you can as they tend to more reliable. Recently their dependability has improved as scope for their popularity in the future increases. The reduced capacity of this design is also a consideration and it is common for a kitchen designer to specify two dishwasher drawers as a result. And if you are a larger family there are wider 90cm versions available.
So let's talk dishwashers regular size dishwashers before we narrow our focus down to small ones. A standard size dishwasher is 24 inches wide 24 inches deep and 35 inches high. Any dishwasher 18 inches or narrower is considered small. A standard dishwasher can clean 12 place settings at a time and this same size is considered big enough for a family of four. Before you go shopping for a dishwasher of any size you need to be sure there is room to install it even if its only 18 inches wide. Dishwashers almost always need to be installed next to a sink. But even if your kitchen is so oddly set up that you can't fit a dishwasher next to the sink you can still go with a counter top dishwasher. More on those in a moment.
